Most of it. The different climate regions don’t blend together very well, but each area on its own is very well designed, with several winding paths and optional explorable portions. The fact that Surf is a completely optional HM lends well to this, so you always know that if you’re surfing around somewhere that you’re just doing extra exploration. As far as dungeons go, Unova has a pretty solid Victory Road. And I’ve always liked Chargestone Cave and Twist Mountain as well.

the route leading to the ghost tower was also good

but my favourite one was the one leading from icirrus to the bridge, especially in winter

You're not wrong but that isn't an issue with Gen 5 or 6 as much as it is an issue with them failing to deliver for 7 and 8.
Gen 5 felt like a fresh start which Gen 6 expanded on and started building towards something else, but Gen 7 decided to completely drop the ball and remove gameplay in favor of flashy gimmicks like Z-Moves instead.
