Sharing key features and bringing prominent changes is objectively the best form of evolution, followed closely behind by the completely different shape evolution (Depending on the mon, some are better than others) and just getting bigger being in last place.
EVOLUTION should denote notable change, something that visually communicates why a Pokemon would be Stronger, Faster or in some other way, would be be better than its previous form.
Croagunk to Toxicroak, I can SEE the development of its abilities and attitude, I can SEE why taking a hit from a Toxicroak would hurt more than taking one from Croagunk.
Ponyta to Rapidash just looks like a teenager compared to a young adult. Yeah, there's change, but so little that it might as well just be a single stage pokemon. And that's why I hate the "It just gets bigger" evolutions so much, they're a waste of space. Getting older isn't evolution.
