Which games do you recommend for a newfag?

I hadn't played Pokemon since like 1998 until recently. I beat Red or Blue as a kid. I got injured recently and haven't been able to play keyboard and mouse games, so I bought a PC controller and downloaded some emulators to pass time while I recover. I just finished playing Red and loved it, and I was gonna do another Gen1 run with a different team, but after playing LeafGreen for a little bit, I found the UI improvements were too good to pass up so I decided to do that one.

Alakazam because his special attack and STAB Psychic are way overpowered;
Snorlax because he has the funnest build I've created so far (BodySlam/Hyperbeam/Rest/Sleeptalk) and overpowered stats;
Golem because Rollout is the coolest individual move I've found so far:
Dewgong for water/ice, and even though Lapras has better stats, Dewgong learns Rest;
Charizard for fire/flying type and because I need someone with Fly;
Exeggcutor for grass STAB and 75% sleep chance and I gave him Psychic STAB and Dreameater

A small part of me enjoys looking at the stats/movepools and creating builds more than actually playing the game
