Do you agree with this philosophy? I disagree because i feel like pokemon are cooler when they look more distinct than regular animals but with generic type theme and/or are based on multiple concepts. I like Pokémon that you can't immediately tell what animal its based on from just looking at it.

Patrat is literally the worst pokemon. Completely forgettable and the design is simply bad. Not even "bad but memorable" like Stonjourner. Just the most boring. Ugly and garbage. If I could remove one pokemon, I would remove Patrat.
Why does it even exist? Unova already had a route 1 normal type. Patrat is a waste of space. Not to mention it has awful stats, movepool, and abilities. When a new generation comes out I look at Watchog's new learnset and go "Wow, it gets Laser Focus now!!!! It's so good!! Not. Still absolute garbage." But at least Watchog has some vaguely interesting design elements like its fur that is patterned like a safety vest. It's not good, but it's complete. Patrat is a basically nothing. If Watchog is a poorly constructed, ill-informed sentence, Patrat is someone going "uuuhhhhhhhhhhhh...".
Patrat doesn't deserve a spot as a pokemon.

I think it's important to have both. Pokemon are the animals of that world, so having some that look natural are a good contrast to the ones that make no real sense outside of a kids game.

This is what the early gens were like (especially gen 1 and 3), and I wish they brought the old design philosophy back, maybe even the old gen 1 artstyle too.

In doses. I understand that the simplicity of a creature makes more dynamic designs stand out more, and for something that is clearly intended to be a common monster like Patrat and Pidove, it works.

With that being said, I kind of hate the overabundance of Pokemon that are just animals or are just two steps away from being an animal. And we get more of them every generation. Like Centiskorch is just a flaming centipede but its rectangular. I hate it. It's so fucking boring. We already have a monster based on centipede's and stuff. I really wish they would stop with the
>Obligatory new doggo, birdo, etc
and just reuse existing ones. There's like almost a thousand Pokemon, and there never needed to be that many.
