Mega Evolution isn't counterproductive since they can actually expand on it and easily bring it anywhere.
The gimmicks are made with death in mind, which prevents them from fully expanding on them at all, which is pretty par for the course with Gen 7 and 8 in general.
I want a solid Gen 9 with no gimmicks. Just like how it used to be in Gen 6 and below.

you say this as a joke but everybody knows we're eventually getting fusion.
So many other monster games have fusion like based Digimon and other titles like Persona but Pokemon has been putting it off for decades.
With the popularity of pokemon fusion fanart + pokemon fusion generator websites and them testing the waters with Kyurem and the Galar fossilmons, it's going to happen

Never seen anyone deny that seeing that it's literally built into the whole megashit functionality.
That said, I'd argue Gen 2 started once-per battle gimmicks, since many items can only be used once per battle Z-Moves aren't technically a once-per-battle gimmick either since you can use them twice in some instances, but if we're counting cases like that I guess Gen 5 also has a once-per-battle gimmick since you can only use the Wonder Launcher once as well in some instances.
