OS is made more dramatic than usual simply because it was the first permanent goodbye for a character. I don't think the writers would have made Misty leaving seem so sad if they knew this would be a tradition going forward. Also the original trio splitting up is kinda downplayed by Brock just coming back only 4 eps later. If both Misty/Brock left permanently at the end of OS it would have had a bigger impact.

Gary had both Nidoking and Nidoqueen, basically fit his ground theme because in the games he takes over Viridian Gym and those were pokemon Giovanni used.

Gary actually used Arcanine to race Ash/Bayleef in the ep Ash got Phanpy's egg in Johto. I know nobody remembers this because nobody remembers mid-Johto, but I liked that ep Gary raced Ash.

Because his character was regressed into a literal little kid. In previous seasons he had matured a lot, and there was no need for him to cry because he understood that these goodbyes were only temporary.

Also, the best goodbyes were DP, OS, and XY. Ash and Brock’s last goodbye at the crossroads always gets me emotional.

That's not really true. There's a few scenes he acts slightly more silly than usual but in most episodes Ash didn't act any childish than any saga prior to XY. Can't count the meme faces either because they used those for everyone on the cast.

Prior to the league Gary appeared in 3 Johto episodes.

The one with Hoot Hoot at the very beginning (he only appears in this ep for like 3 minutes), the one Umbreon battles Pikachu, and then the one he and Arcanine race Ash/Bayleef...and Ash gets Phanpy's egg when he wins.

For some reason the writers barely had Gary appear in Johto, would have done away with a lot of Johto filler.

Do you guys cry every time you leave your friends for a long time? Much less as a kid? I moved from New York, to Michigan, to Maryland, to DC, to finally North Carolina, and I only cried twice, both times when I was younger and not older when I again realize these goodbyes are only temporary.

Doesn’t matter if he wasn’t on a “journey” like previous sagas, he could’ve traveled to other islands to explore Alola and actually learn more about it instead of constantly saying “I’ve learned so much while in Alola” and not actually seeing that.

How is he not that much different? First off he’s not blowing up and having over exaggerated reactions to everything. He’s also not stationary anymore like in SM, constantly on the move and trying to do the next big thing that comes to interest to the two. His personality is a lot more tame, like he was in previous series, where he’s more nonchalant and just goes with the flow instead of acting like everything is super special awesome amazing like a retard.

And in terms of battles, where SM Ash really lacked at, JN Ash is back to doing what he used to do, which is controlling the battle in his own way, coming up with out of the box methods or strategies that make use of his Pokémon’s toolkit and not ass pulls that SM was notorious for.

There’s a clear difference between the two versions of the character.

Mmmm no. By JN25, all 8 regions had been visited, since then all of them besides Sinnoh have had plenty of visits since then. Ash and Goh travel to different regions fairly commonly, while you can’t say the same for SM. Ula Ula was visited 10 times within 146 episodes, which is absolutely insane especially when you consider several locations on Ula Ula in the games weren’t even shown in the anime. And Ula Ula isn’t the only island to have this happen, Akala Island was the 2nd most visited island and yet it also had entire towns that didn’t appear, as well as other locations.

That would have almost never happened in a previous saga, and if it ever actually did, it would at least get a cameo or seen somewhere else like in the movies.

Yes, because that’s part of Ash’s character. Ash is someone that wants to explore the Pokémon world as much as he can, which is why he’s always moving forward to the next location. Ash has only ever stayed in one place for more than a day if something important was happening or he was training. In Alola, Ash would spend the day watching tv, doing laundry, or simply just hanging around until someone took him along somewhere. It would be extremely rare for Ash to ever get up and go somewhere himself or decide where the group were heading next, or even what the plans would be for the day. Like another anon said, it’s just jarring and doesn’t fit Ash at all.

In Ash VS Hau, Ash’s IQ dropped and stupid decisions were being made at the expense of another character. Even if you argue the falling asleep = disqualification rule from OS is outdated, both Pokémon were both down and in the end only one stood up, which in any battle from a previous series, meant that Pokémon won. Doesn’t matter if Rowlet was asleep, it wasn’t being responsive, didn’t get up when it was called, and that should’ve resulted in Ash losing. Also, how the hell did Hala know that Ash’s Rowlet was asleep when it was laying flat on the ground? Why was Ash allowed to go on the battlefield and wake up Rowlet himself to continue the battle? Then there’s the massive asspull that is Feather Dance that isn’t Feather Dance but actually Substitute. It’s like there’s no need for the battle to have went the way it went because all it ended up doing was embarrassing Hau and making Ash look like a dirt bag especially since he was so devastated that he lost that he didn’t even attempt to congratulate Hau until after his initial cope which again is a sharp contrast to his previous League losses.

It’s honestly maddening to think about because the backlash was so bad on the Japanese side, and I remember the writer even received death threats.

That didn't sit right with me for a long while but I still had my hopes for it...then the hau episode came which at first I was excited since Rowlet was getting a real rival and finally ment that it could develop properly without some meme shit...and the episode happened...They fed him an everstone, that moment was when my head leaned back a bit and made me realize ash's rowlet was ignored for a majority of the early season just to be fed an everstone? After that I dropped rowlets character because there's no defense for this badly written character. And just when I thought things couldn't get any worse for rowlets character, ash vs hau happens and that episode just backed up the reason why I hate rowlet. And don't get the wrong idea, I don't hate rowlet the Pokemon in fact the Rowlet line is my #1 favorite pokemon as of current day. I hate ash's Rowlet specifically. I hate it even more that when the hau vs ash episode happened everyone blamed the one guy who directed it(which is fine I guess) But to be very honest, no one would be able to properly write a good reason for why an underdeveloped character like rowlet was supposed to beat a fully evolved decidueye. The best option was to let ash lose and learn his rowlet was underdeveloped.

The thing that really just fucking sucks, and I mean just absolutely reeks about Serena and characters like her is that she brings nothing to the table of any value. Her little journey to learn that 'she's good enough' or 'that she likes to make people smile' ultimately isn't exciting, funny, or worthy of discussion. You just observe it and it happens and you move on. It isn't even so overwhelmingly wholesome or emotionally resonant that it leaves you feeling anything. Yeah, a series of character development boxes have been ticked. We have spent the required time observing her learn to be a character.

So fucking what.

Pokemon needs to swing for the fences or cease to be put in front of my eyes. It's always going to be a mostly episodic cheap little series, so it should at least be VERY funny, VERY wholesome, or VERY cool. Serena is none of these. The showcases are whack as fuck, as are the characters that come with them. Her crush on Ash doesn't go anywhere fantastic. She's a series of half measures that I feel nothing for.

Say what you want about Koharu, she's a wet blanket, her hair is stupid, she's another girl with an Eevee. But at least her appearances have been few and she's moved forward in some way with each one. It's pleasant to see her move along because we don't have to inch and fill episodes with moments of her being 'the girl' who can't take a beating or be the butt of the joke like the boys. She's there when its time to use her, and she's gone when she has no use. Infinitely better than Serena.

Because both Pokémon were down and when it came to the point where they had to stand up to continue, the only one that did was Decidueye. Rowlet falling asleep meant it couldn’t continue battling, and it took the battle going on pause, Ash going on the field and waking him up himself, and the whole thing basically going on reset.

The battle wasn’t good either, Rowlet was taking a beating the entire time. It’s supposed to be one sided because Rowlet did not properly train even the slightest bit enough to be able to handle Decidueye. The fact that it lost so easily to Dartrix the first time, won the second time but didn’t train at all until literally a couple minutes before the next battle with Decidueye shows how grossly underdeveloped it is and how underserving the win really was.

I just watched the last episode of Sun and Moon again and I really have to say that they could have spent one more episode helping to tie everything together.

The finale was okay but man if the Team Rocket moments weren’t there it would’ve been way more lackluster than it already felt. First off, Ash and Solgaleo going on a last minute adventure that isn’t shown at all and the only info we get about it being Ash’s asinine explanation was really bad and felt a tad unnecessary. I know it’s supposed to be justification for why Ash wants to leave, so he can explore more new places, but he was already doing that anyways and the writers were treating it like he was just gonna go back home and sit on his ass which never happens.

Then all the companions besides Lillie getting sent off one after the other for real odd ball reasons again felt half assed. It’s worse when you realize in their comeback episode, none of them even brought up anything they did during their vacations or showed any progress whatsoever. It’s just the kids back at school again, while Lillie is still out searching for her dad. And Mallow’s Shaymin just fucking off was also a real slap in the face because it didn’t do anything of note, it was her last friend, and then they just pan off without giving Mallow anything else. If there’s one character this show really massacred, it’s Mallow.

And while Ash’s farewell with the professors was very wholesome, his farewells with his classmates felt forced. Ash cried for Misty and Brock because they were his first friends, and hasn’t cried for any of his other companions that he’s done far more with.

Its definitely Top 5 in terms of finales but that’s really not saying much when the only one worse than it was Best Wishes.

Mallow's Shaymin was the reincarnation of her dead mother. When Shaymin changed to its Sky Form, the Shaymin had the same eyes as her mother instead of the usual eyes a Shaymin has. This was done subtle without the anime pointing it out as it would fly over kids heads. Mallow's mother got to spend some more time with her daughter.

I remember on twitter/tumblr people posted side by side images of Shaymin and Mallow's mother and it fit perfectly.

Nah, it's also much better than AG's farewell.

I think OS. DP, XY and SM all had the best final episodes for different reasons. AG's and BW's were done poorly though.

The Alola gang were like his family which is why cried for them. The fact that they prepared a last surprise for him in the style of his previous Ultra Ranger missions made him tear up, and right fully so. He was closer to them and the region than most other regions and companions because Alola is like his second home, which was established throughout the series. Also all of the companions motives for vacation were hinted. Sophocles wanting to be an astronaut was established in the Sandslash episode. Lana always joked about catching or watching mythical pokemon so her going to find Manaphy was in character. Kiawe wanting to be a kahuna was hinted very early on in the series. The shaymin thing was rushed but it was good to at least end a rushed plot then leave it without a conclusion

Yes and no. He sorta kinda train with the grass z-move but later on even torracat was able to use a z-move without specifically training for it. Bravebird was the only acceptable time but everything else is just random bs or slapstick shit. Rowlet is just plush In ash's team with bs plot armor.

The show had many peaks.

Kanto/Orange Islands was the first peak, Johto was a noticeable step down.

AG was a peak over Johto, and at the time, it was the best written saga after Kanto

DP is considered the peak of all the older seasons, as it was a combination of everything the writers learned.

XY was a peak if you like shonen mixed with DP

SM was a peak if you like slice of life

Journies could peak if it has a turnaround in the next few years.

DP didn't take itself so seriously and had tons of fun stuff in between the serious battles. Dawn was fun, and while Brock was very pointless, still managed to make a good trip with Ash and her. There was just a great balance of everything. In XY, if an episode isn't a serious battle it's either a lower than average tier filler or boring stuff like Serena melodrama
