On paper, in a medium that isn't pure abstractions like a game, yes, a Haunter or Gengar would have a blatant advantage over Sabrina's Psychic Types.
But because the medium everyone refers to for inaccuracy is an abstracted depiction like a turn-based game, never mind a game that suffered from unfortunate programming errors, they think the anime's "wrong" even though the games quickly corrected themselves to better match the anime in GS, at least within the confines of the Gastly Line.
