In a sense, that's awesome design, but it gets ruined by other mons that do the same WITHOUT the weakness.

Onix is definitely a Pokémon that I don't think could be designed today. I love it, but there's no way a Pokémon concept that simple would be considered marketable enough.

I don't think Onix was ever meant to be as huge as it is. The original sprite doesn't seem to convey that great a size and the designers said on interviews how they weren't the ones to set the pokedex weight/height data on the pokedex so at times they were really surprised how different their official size turned out compared to how they originally envisioned them.

Perhaps this is part of the reason Onix is notoriously weak, because it was not supposed to be the gargantuan snake monster we're used to in the first place.

This would be my suggestion for Onix stats
HP: 75
Attack: 65
Defense: 160
Sp. Atk: 55
Sp. Def: 65
Speed: 90
That's just so its stats mimic the Scyther/Scizor steel coat evolution of the same gen. Then give it Coil and Glare like the other snakemons.
This isn't supposed to make Onix "good" or be a complete overhaul. This is what I'd accept for an Onix buff AT MINIMUM.

Actual explanation: back in the day Pokemon wasn't supposed to become a long-running series with a competitive scene. It was designed much more around traditional RPG mechanics. Onix was the first boss and its purpose was to teach new players about type effectiveness. It was specifically designed to punish players who were running around clicking Scratch or Tackle on everything, hence the obscenely high defense and resistance to normal but low everything else. It was supposed to make players realize that you can turn a difficult battle into an easy one by changing your strategy and taking advantage of weaknesses. From this perspective Onix's stat spread actually serves its purpose perfectly. The problem of course is that after this job was fulfilled, there wasn't much left for Onix anymore since its stats didn't really allow it to do anything else. It was supposed to be an early game boss, nothing more.
