It is weird. Imagine living in Circhester but having to go all the way down to Turffield where the climate houses a bunch of weak Pokemon just to start your gym challenge.
Then you just blow through Milo since his team is the same because you don't even have any badges.
Pokemon's worldbuilding has been poor since Sun and Moon, but this is just mundane.

The devs set an order, you drooling fuck always had. They only made it mandatory, when kids failed to understand Sinnoh - if they were forced to start showing the kids where to go, they had to start forcing gyms in order on them too, to make sure they could get to where they needed to and that started in Platinum, where they forced you into a loop before getting to fight Fantina.

No they didn't.
The only order in the Kanto games is that you have to do Misty -> Brock -> Surge and Giovanni last.
Same with Johto. Gotta do Falkner -> Bugsy -> Whitney -> Morty
Then with Hoenn, they even explicitly mention needing to beat Winona if you miss her gym.
There is no correct order in Sinnoh except with Platinum that forces it.
