Can you show me a source for the peafowl = phoenix? Ive only read A Peacock Flying to the Southeast. Picrelated is an chinese depiction of an peacock. The Erya description of the phoenix didnt include peafowls in the bird mixture.

pretty much any traditional painting of the chinese "phoenix" has a tail that his unequivocally peacock based

for written descriptions they were describing a foreign bird the common people were not familiar with, not even sure if they even had a word for peacock at the time. describing a peacock as being kind of like a supercolorful rooster with a giant tail isn't too far off. kind of like in medieval europe elephants were thought as donkeys with blowhorn snouts and boar tusks

Lanturn is a fucking Anglerfish
Tapu Fini is a Hawaiian God that has a shell resembling a Swordfish (not a Bottlenose Dolphin)
Cutiefly is a Bee Fly and Fairyfly, and also has elements of changelings and sprites (it's not the typical household fly and they both function very differently)
Venonat is a fucking Gnat
Unfezant is a fucking Pheasant

However, I will commend Game Freak, because Pheromosa is a fucking incredible Cockroach Pokemon that takes a lot of elements from actual roaches to accurately represent them rather than going with the typical "lol filthy roach" idea.
