Dracozolt and Dracovish both have Sand Rush as Hidden Abilities, and they're Dragon-type, they were practically tailor-made for his gym battle team which was probably unintentional on Game Freak's part. They could easily take place the place of Sandaconda so he has a team of 5.

sand spit refreshes sand on damage, if he had decent ai he would drag sandstorm out so sandaconda faints the turn after sandstorm ends, setting it for duraludon
his team doesn’t actually have any synergy with sand though other than not taking damage from it lol>>46986702
