The Swords of Justice aren't really capturable in the base game until you've at least beaten Skyla and probably later since it requires backtracking to several locations, so of course they're strong. Meanwhile, Archen is easily obtained right after Burgh and can easily roll over most of the opposition (outside of Elesa) right up until Iris or Drayden. In the main game, Archen getting Defeatist triggered isn't a guarantee, it's a tense moment from overly relying on your bird.
