I've literally never seen this complaint considering the entire thing about the level curve is the exact opposite and Johto is otherwise known for its first three gyms being actually challenging between Roost, U-Turn and Miltank.

The wild encounter Pokemon are weak, and they're your main source of EXP, so they don't prepare you for the upcoming challenges of the leaders. How do you miss your bait that hard?

You didn't give him a proper answer though. You were off to a good start by using BW2 as the proper comparison since its a sequel like Johto games are. But then you used Challenge Mode, which isn't fair, and is difficult to unlock anyway.

Level curve is a massive meme, you should have an uphill battle against important opponents and there are plenty of ways around the level gap like x-items or status moves. Only retards who just use attacking moves need to be on the same level as the opponent.
