Did these even have anything special other than changing the background and limiting the Pokemon that could take part in them?
Sky battles are by far one of the worst battle gimmicks they introduced and it's not like there's no competition either.

I think they tried to "compensate" for the GBA's lack of backlight in gen 3 by abstracting the colors somewhat
Not sure about the wings though, I imagine it had to do with the fact gen 5 was around the time they really started "standardizing" all the designs, even though the more official digital "stock" art started in the gen 3 era
