I even looked at one of those Japanese maps to see if it was Nagoya or some city we just don't get to see in game, but that didn't work out either. Still, a random inland Japanese town we never see is my best guess. Am I the only one that wants to see Japan finished, with some kanto-y/ johto-y interior regions that get more similar to hoenn or sinnoh depending on how far south or north you travel? Set in the 90s old timeline if we're really pipe-dreaming.
GF is focused on random locales throughout the world now. Maybe it is more interesting to them. I just think Japan is comfy and makes the most sense for pokemon. Hawaii really worked in a way.
