Honestly, my own theory on the matter sees immunities not as part of the Type chart but instead as traits of the typing. Most types have special traits such as Grass being immune to spore and powder moves, Ghost being immune to trapping, Ground, Rock, and Steel types not being damaged in Sandstorm, or Dark types being immune to Prankster. If we see Flying's immunity to Ground as a trait that gives it the effects of the Levitate Ability rather than an immunity and moves that take away Ground immunity as moves that specifically wipe out the effects of the Levitate Ability in a similar fashion to the way Gastro Acid can wipe out any Ability's effects, things fall into place more easily.
