OP said nothing about the designs, they are talking about the art style (I'm assuming the Sugimori artwork) but honestly that's so fucking wrong. 2002 artwork is the perfect mix of Gen 1 traditional watercolour and the move to digital art for the newer generations of Pokemon. An absolute gem of a Pokedex art series that evokes nostalgia and advancement for the series at the same time. Fuck you OP.

Not sure if you mean art style in the design philosophy or Sugimori's actual art style at the time.
But if it is the latter then I definitely agree. All the art is so stiff and lifeless. Look at this poster that shows the original Hoenn dex and compare the art of the gen I and II mons to the new III mons. You can see the soul leaving the art in real time.

It's very iconic actually. Sure some mememons do the dreaful "hurr i haev a faek faec" gimmick garbage but on the whole it's very balanced and concise. A far cry from the pastel effeminate Gen 2 designs.
