Pokemon throughout the entire franchise are practically human in every way but appearance. They just can't speak human language.

They're consistently shown to have have the same emotions, behaviors, and thought processes as humans. And they understand human speech innately, they don't need to be taught that words mean or how to carry out commands, they know all of this stuff instinctively.

what about "island of the giant pokemon" & the anime in general? they're sort of on the line there. I think Shudo & N were right, Pokemon need to be freed from slavery & could just be party members in future games. I dont condone interspecies relations even in that context though, unless they are provably intelligent & communicative. a better series would have a mix of clearly distinct animals & fantasy races though.
