My unironic opinion:
Generations 1-5 focused on making species, not characters. The choices actually took time for the average casual pokemon player to make. The starters were approachable by anyone, and gradually became one of your strongest in the design. Generation 6-8 wanted to create personalities and completely chucks the idea of making them monstrous and animalistic. This began when fucks started shilling Greninja for no apparent reason, and now look what we've got. Vore with your fucking wallets, lads.

This post is stupid, because (and I say this as someone who loves Snivy and played the fuck out of Gen 5 as a kid), Snivy and Oshawott are both characters. Oshawott is a Samurai in training and Smugleaf is a smug blue-blooded aristocrat snake that turns into a monarch.

So if anything its Gen 1 through 4.

Empoleon is a penguin that has black spots on it's chest that somewhat resemble a royal coat.
Incineroar is a wrestler with a tiger head, complete with identical human proportions (literally standing completely straight) and a conveniently retarded fire belt.

Empoleon has a personality in the pokedex but this is in no way shown through the design and "pride" is a lot more flexible and simple than goofball wrestler. Fuck most animals in real life would not allow another to hit them, which is the only source of pride that empoleon has

Yes I phrased it wrong. My point really, is that Incineroar completely embodies this specific idea of a wrestler from irs design to it's dex entries. It is so specifically a wrestler it is completely absurd to imagine it in the wild alongside other pokemon (this thing is supposed to hunt and thrive away from humans right?) meanwhile empoleon is a penguin with subtle visual references to various subjects (royalty, Neptune) and happens to have a simple, non-intrusive personality that is reasonably close to how people view animals like lions or wolves
