They should have really gone for a slightly darker marketing of the OG Layton team (Layton, Luke and Flora), make a Detective Conan-esque anime to promote it, etc. Make some easier and more accessible action based spinoffs with Flora and Luke as the MCs for the kids. It wouldn't be a Pokemon killer but I think it could have been a proper solid franchise in itself.

I wouldn't actually know but Yokai Watch imo is too childish to appeal to the weeb crowd and too weebish to appeal to the children. I might be wrong though.
Pokemon is way more universal in its fantasy elements.
