Why does gamefreak insist on putting a token desert in every game since gen V? It's fucking weird having to see a goddamn desert in the middle of France, Hawaii and the UK.

The environment for Unova is so wonky. It’s mostly boring city and then they add deserts and caves with floating rocks and shit. It makes zero sense to me, I got a more American vibe from Sinnoh.

Regions after Unova have been an abstraction of, or a representation, of real life. That is why Kalos and Galar are mishmashes of various regions and terrains, and Alola contains isolated areas that thematically do not make sense for Hawaii. Game Freak does not put effort into games anymore.

Gens 1-4 are literally based on regions of Japan. For the first two, they're even called Kanto and Johto in real life. 5-8 are more like cartoon versions of a country rather than a representation of the reality on any level.
