His only real good trait is his infinite determination towards his career progress - even after he lost 6 times in a row yet he continued to level up as a trainer. That's it, there's nothing else really consistent to his character that a kid watching the ashnime could take from Ash as a role model.
His view on morality is too simple and unrealistic, his romance is almost non exostent aside from Giselle who was a character of the day.
As for OP's message, actually only when you force yourself to be different on the INSIDE and to change is when you actually develop. Just being sincere without any self reflection will only lead to stagnation and being a boring person.
So yes, of you want people to like you, you gotta make one hell of an effort. And it's worth it if you're a smart person.
