Also whatever they do the anime never had any sense of stakes or suspense because the results of battles always depended on plot and the mood of writers alone.
Matches are a bunch of unpredictable bullshits, nothing makes sense.
At least they used to have fun writing the weakest and dumbest anime protagonist of all time, now it's just another isekai cheating MC.

Takeshi Shudo, the anime chief writer explained why Ash used to lose a lot.
It's supposed to be a message to the kids, sth like "You won't win 1st place in life just because you're the main character".
After XYZ, the anime shifted its tone and inherent nature to the point where it's pretty much a reboot with a different MC in anything but name so the writers aren't really constrained by the previous writing style anymore. That's why Ash now wins a lot.

I never understood it either, it's not like winning one League makes you a 'Pokemon Master', and it would be completely out of character for him to suddenly retire from battling after winning once when there are tons of other regions

Tobias was the start of it feeling like the writers were having to actively contrive ways of making Ash lose, instead of it just being a natural progression of his character
Gen 5 and 6 were just kicking him while he was down
