>>47048170Sort of got a point about the rival thing/solitude thing.
You can fight Green again outside of Viridian but it's an optional battle. If you choose not to do it, then the next time you see him is in Cerulean, then the S.S. Anne, then Pokemon Tower, and after that, you don't see him again until Silph Co, at which point you can have up to 6 badges. If you do Pokemon Tower right as you get to Lavender Town, then that's double the amount of badges since your last encounter (you would have about 3 in Lavender Town). Next is Viridian again after 2 more badges, and then there's the Pokemon League. It feels like Red and Green progress at the same rate, but like Green is off doing his own thing.
GSC's progression with Gold/Kris and Silver is a little closer, but not too much. You meet him at Sprout Tower, but you don't fight. He just wanted to train there.
Then he fucks off until pretty much the tail end of Azalea Town and that's your second fight. Then you don't see him for the entirety of your first Goldenrod visit.
You see him in Ecruteak. But you have to go through a whole route and National Park first. And considering Sudowoodo is in the way you have to play the Goldenrod level, so that's a big gap between visits.
He shows up in Olivine but doesn't fight you, and after that, he practically disappears until Team Rocket takes over Goldenrod.
Victory Road after that.
And then he disappears again until Mt.Moon, where he is reformed.
He shows up more often than Green, but he also fucks off for most of the time, allowing you room to breathe.
In RSE, Brendan/May hardly show up, but they're the worst rival in the franchise so this isn't a good thing.
Barry strikes a nice balance between doing his own thing and progressing alongside you, but its been a while since I've played DPPt so I won't list his encounters.
Starting from Gen 5 Bianca and Cheren are with you all the fucking time. It was novel for the time, but became formulaic from Gen 6 onward.
