I desperately want Gamefreak to expand on the lore but I would greatly prefer if they did that in way that encouraged fan theories and speculation rather than strangling them.

Same. For me the breaking point in Pokémon lore being just ridiculous was the Zinnia plot and multiverse.
Bare bones has its benefits in its simplicity.
