Remakes (especially BDSP), exist for two reasons; both involving nostalgia and money.
The first reason is, nostalgia sells. That's it.

The second is to introduce people who used to play the games as kids, back into the series as older kids and young adults who now have more disposable income. A kid who played DPP when they were 8 are now 18, past that "Pokemon is kiddie bullshit" phase, left their DS at their parents house when they went to college, and are now interested in buying something that reminds them of their early childhood. That's why we want remakes to begin with. Thats why they all come out in ten (ish) year intervals.

The one-two punch of BDSP and Legends Arceus is actually kind of brilliant in that way, because the older Pokemon remakes had to kind of pull double duty; they had to reintroduce people to Pokemon, AND show them where the series is at now.
With these games, they've split those tasks up:
First they buy BDSP because it reminds them of their childhood
THEN they buy Legends because they have new, positive associations with the brand, AND it reminds them of more modern games that they probably play; Skyrim and Assassin's Creed and Breath of the Wild and Far Cry and so forth.

If nothing else, It's a really well thought out marketing decision on TPC's part.
