What battery am I supposed to put in a RSE cartridge? I’ve looked it up and got like 4 different answers.

I just bought cr1616s. Supposedly it just needs to be a 3V lithium, and the only difference between 2016 and 1616 is the size, with 1616 being closer to the original.

Energizer CR1616. The first two digits are thickness of battery, so CR2016 does not substitute as the carts have very little room.

He's wrong, the board needs power to retain your save. Make sure to buy a joeyjr first to back up your save.
And all of you planning to replace batteries please solder them in properly. Don't just do a hack job with electrical tape.

"Internal battery has run dry" error message

This occurs when there is a problem with the internal battery of the Pokémon game pak that regulates the clock feature of the game. For the most part, other than a few minor events, this will not affect game play, nor will there be any loss of saved data. The save info is preserved in the game's memory chip, not the battery.

NTA, but an Emerald with a burnt battery always resets to the default frame when it's reset (as in turned off and on), so if you start a new file and get an early shiny frame, which you would check by doing the birch fight a few times, and restarting the file again if there's no shiny encounters. Once you have a file with early shiny frames you can just save and turn off/on to find easy shinies.

Shiny hunting like that is more trouble than its worth, you're basically doing a full odds shiny hunt that takes even longer to set up plus even if you somehow get a savefile with an early shiny frame its pretty easy to miss seeing as the games run at 60fps

My mother snipped my Sapphire in half with kitchen shears when I was 8 because I accidentally broke one of my little sister's toys. Traumatic experience i know but on topic, this is my biggest fear with these cartidges, I had my silver battery die ten years ago and it took my ten year save with it and all the pokemon I had collected. I hear for the GBA games it's a simple process, my brother did it with his in less than 15 minutes but he was a whiz at soldering. My guess is a watch battery of some sort but i'm not a whiz with electronics like bro was.

Fortunately with Gen 3 games, the save file doesn't die when the battery dies, and replacing the battery doesn't wipe the save file either. It's also a fairly easy swap, although you need a specific screwdriver to do it, and ideally you need a soldering iron too (even if you're just going to stick the new battery in with electrical tape instead of soldering in a new one, it's nearly impossible to remove the battery without a soldering iron to heat up and weaken the contacts). Just use 1616 watch batteries, and make sure you put it in facing the same way as the old battery, and you'll be fine.

If you have basic pliers you can remove the battery with a lot of wiggling. Just be really careful with the board. If you're going to be using the tape method, make sure the correct contacts are still touching. Just taping the battery in won't do anything.

Electrical tape is fine too, replaced my battery maybe 2 or 3 years ago and everything has been running perfectly after like 300 hours of gameplay in total. You can use a knife or flathead screwdriver (anything thin enough basically that has strength to it) to wiggle the tongs holding the battery together, though you'll find it's a bit tough and you're going to feel like you're destroying your cartridge.

Don't rip the spot welded tabs off the oem battery like a fucking ape. A cheapo pinecil soldering iron, some desoldering wick and a small roll of solder will barely run you any more than like 40$, do you really want to risk snapping a 100$ and rising collectible in half just because you don't want to buy a basic household tool?

Also you want tabbed cr1616s, it's like a dollar to get one off ebay.

Before I needed to replace batteries I would just rip them off and use electrical tape but last round of carts I fixed I just got a cheap soldering iron and some batteries from online that have the tabs pre-installed. It's actually so much easier doing four solder points and done than trying to rip the battery off the tabs, get the new one in and make sure it stays with tape... idk even if you've never used an iron before it's definitely worth it imo to replace them cleanly. Not to mention I ordered them from some wholesaler site to get ones with brackets and got eight batteries for what it cost for like one at CVS. Maybe matters more for the GBA games than the GB ones though, I guess

I bought 2 of them for like $5 shipped. The guy ships them in a paper envelope with the batteries wrapped in masking tape but they work and have the little metal piece that you need after you remove the old solder

Also let me add. I didn't buy the game bit. I melted a pen because I didn't want to wait to get the screw out and I screwed up my pokemon crystal screw trying to get it out with tiny screwdrivers. I was able to pull it off but just buy the bit. Also watch a video it's super easy but don't burn the pads. Aside from that I didn't use a desoldering wick I just added new solder over the old. A crude but effective way to do it.

Tldr: don't worry too much but basic tools will go a long way

Can the RSE cartridge fit a bigger battery other than the CR1616’s? Anything that’s will give it more than the average 10 years of time?

Speaking of Soldering, I plan to swap the ROM chip of Pokémon Crystal and attach it to the Japanese Crystal motherboard. Any tips?

You're not likely to be able to fit anything thicker than a cr1616 into a RSE cart, things are already cramped in there as is to the point that the front of the shell even has a cutout just to make room for the tab. I honestly would worry about it, 10ish years on one battery is already more than enough and it's not like having to swap the battery will damage your save in any way, aside from having to use a save editor to apply a fix for the RTC.

As for swapping ROM chips on Crystal, I'd advise against it unless you're a career electrician with the experience and tools for micro-soldering, or know one. Desoldering and soldering chips like that is far far beyond the realm of amateur electronics tinkering. If you really want your english crystal cart to have a cool design on the back of it just print it out on a piece of paper and stuff it in there.

I'll add though if you're really adamant about performing a chip swap yourself, look up youtube techniques on how to solder chips into place, buy the right equipment for the job, find a pair cheapass cartridges you won't care if you break and practice swapping chips between them until you can do it in your sleep before you think about trying it on your crystal carts.

Nope, not without permanently modifying the shell. I don't think it's worth that damage when you can just as easily swap it every 7-10 years (the components of the board will fail long before tabbed batteries aren't accessible) and reset the RTC.

All good. Yeah, it's a shame there isn't more space for bigger batteries, but honestly IMO it's a bigger design flaw that it's necessary in the first place. Fair enough if flash memory wasn't easily available in the 90s, but you think Nintendo would've thought about adding a clock functionality to their dedicated handhelds (not counting the G&W) before the DS. Could've pretty easily fit a 2032 in the GBA's shell as well.

Just look up any local electronic repair shop and ask them if they can change the batteries on a nintendo cartridge for you, there's bound to be at least someone who can and will do it for you unless you live in the middle of nowhere. Might be a good idea to supply the battery though if you're asking like a phone repair shop or something instead of a place advertising retro console repairs.

Consider the demographic. Kids play pokemon games, if a kid has a problem with their game they'll ask other kids in the kid-centric communities they engage in, who'll provide advice a kid would come up with and fixes a kid can perform. Like a kid can't use a soldering iron but a kid would try to tear a battery off a PCB with a butter knife. Feel free to swap out kid for autistic manchild wherever you want in that statement btw.

Also batteries are such an annoying topic in pokemon game trouble shooting. You have any, ANY problem with a gen 1-3 pokemon cartridge and the only question or answer you'll ever get with your issue is "IS THE BATTERY DEAD????", probably because it's the issue kids see the most I guess though.

Either way though, the fram chip on it is dead. You could save the cartridge by swapping the fram chip out for a new one, either from a donor cart or you might be able to find a brand new one online. As discussed earlier in the thread though soldering out chips is really difficult.
