Axew and Haxorus were both revealed pre-release for Gen 5, but I don't think anyone put together that Axew was a pre-evo of Haxorus until the game released.

I did. They're both greenish lizards with the main feature being tusks coming out of their mouths. It wasn't that hard to figure out.

Not on OP's side but back then we didn't have worldwide name reveals, the name Kibago doesn't really say axe, just "fang child". Still the relationship was easy to guess, the only ones who refused to acknowledge it were bulbapedos, the same lot that were against grouping Giratina with Dialga and Palkia before Platinum and refused to call Metagross robotic for years.

Something like Incineroar, definitely. There no way they started with Litten then worked their way up to wrestle cat, they definitely started with wrestler cat and worked their way back to a simpler form. I imagine this might apply to a lot of starters to some extent.

The poochyena line is paired with the zigzagoon line in being the early route mammal neutral to all the starters. It has nothing to do with Manectric aside from learning similar moves due to both being sort of canine.

Blastoise, Kinda. He was supposed to be unrelated to the Squirtle Line, and I think his line was designed before the Squirtle Line was, but they thought it was redundant having a water turtle as both starter and wild pokemon, so they combined the lines.
