Most mythical Pokémon have some sort of status or rarity associated with them, you can usually tell they're mythical by appearance. Zarude is just an angry monkey and looks like a standard Pokémon, it would have been right at home next to Oranguru and Passimian in Alola.

No the reskins were the regional forms, which is still a neat concept. I won't shit on it.

What Gen 5 did was just take the vague concept of a atleast half of gen 1 and design new pokemon based on those concepts, which would have been intresting if it was only a few pokemon and it wasn't limited to gen 1. In reality this created alot of filler pokemon that were either made themselves or their counterpart redundant.

It might have been more interesting if they did more like Rapidash to Zebstrika, where they changed the type (not just the secondary type). But at that point I'm just describing region forms but with more work.

Zarude has nothing to do with the Grookey line. Like all mythicals after Celebi, Mythicals are designed for the anime/movies. M23 is about a human child who was raised by Pokemon, so they created a monkey Pokemon to be his adoptive father.

That's why Mythicals have almost presence in the games; they're made for the anime and are an afterthought for the games.

They could've easily used the scrapped monkey design from Grookeys. Plus I'm a huge beliver that the Grookey line, Passimian, and Zarude were initially one design they decided to split into 3 separate mons.

You see the same with Deerling line, Virizion, Gogoat, and Shaymin. All of these mons share similar design themes, Also they fact, that GF confirmed that they were planning to add a greass ungulate to Gen 4 but instead it became the Sawsbuck we know today
