The animations Pokemon make, sure they're simple, but so was Crystal's. They give personality to otherwise static sprites and to me is absolute SOUL.

I've never played it to completion and always found it a slog to even get to the start of victory road.
The issue with telling people "this is the best pokemon game" is that is has to actually BE the best game, not "it's the best pogymans game to me". I went and played it while waiting on Platinum to releasee, after Diamond and.... yeah. Just... just.
