If that trainer faced Giratina, that trainer CAUGHT Giratina. Fuck the DIRECT sequel games showed the previous MC's effect on the world too, almost as if the MC catching the box legend is canon. It's even explained, the MC is the only one who's able to face the box legend, they spend enough time sucking the player off how good/pure-hearted/kind they are to pokémon, that it stands to reason they would not only not KO the Legend, they'd want to catch it to show it a side of the world it never saw before.
