Might be a bit too much headcanon but I think she just doesn't feel like Alola needs a Royal sovereign anymore and is content with being a Captain/E4. Or her line was old name but poor in money in recent days, maybe her father was the one who tried to put the Mart that got wrecked by the ghosts and thus lost their last capital around, prompting a sharp decline in health and his death.
She's still a good girl and deserves a happy life.

Pretty sure her being a poor orphan is part of why he called it a shithole. Yes the monarchy is dead, that's subjectively bad, yes their scion is stricken with poverty and basically lives like a feral child, that's objectively bad. At least she's a strong enough trainer that she becomes an E4 member, which means steady and respected employment.

You don't need pay when you're a child, when you're young it's not a big deal because you have parental support. The issue is your exit plan to adulthood. If you're strong enough, like Acerola, you can continue being a trainer professionally, so she's set, her being part of the founding E4 already proves that. Plus she's probably not that concerned with money or being part of society with her upbringing. A lot of the others have obvious hobbies or interests that they might turn into careers, Lana will probably be involved in the fishing industry and Sophocles will obviously be an engineer for example. Meanwhile Kiawe is working at a fucking mart, the lowest tier of work. Honestly, if he was smart he'd get a job doing traditional dances for tourists, as part of a hotel or some other venue. That's a legit thing and at least crosses over with something he enjoys.

Second choice or not, it's not a job you get 'just because.' You have to at least be strong enough to cut it. As far as his shit job, part of my point was that even with his poor prospects, there is a better job available that crosses over with his interests. He just decided to work retail instead.
