not even really a cool gimmick. like i guess the right combo could give you a pokemon with practically no weakness but most of it is just gonna be whatever. the more interesting part is gonna be the movepools but there's no need to have tri-type pokemon to let pokemon get more moves from different types.

It resists the core, most common special coverage in the game and steels while only being weak to Flying and Rock. If this thing has good offensive stats and speed along with Adaptability it is guaranteed Ubers.

Terrible and pointless as a universal mechanic

One cool idea would be a special "held item for trainers" that gives your entire team a STAB boost for a particular type.

For example if you pick your trainer type to be water, every Pokemon you have that has a water attack receives the STAB bonus, even if they're not that type. So now your Nidoking's bubblebeam actually deals damage like a water types without him actually being one.

Something like that might be interesting. It could effectively work like giving your pokemon a 3rd typing without overcomplicating everything.

just make it like megas where only certain pokemon can become tri type. then make it so that the only pokemon that can gain a new type are weak pokemon whose shit stats still keep it from becoming overpowered.

A decent balance for it would be 3rd types as an ability. Like Dhelmise has, but adding resistances and weaknesses too. Then you have a choice of keeping a useful ability or trading it for a useful extra type.

If it was a normal, dual typed pokemon with an ability that treated it like a third type, that could be neat. Charizard would probably become a dragon.

I was thinking you'd use 255 as the base stat maximum, turn it into a proportion, and then flip it.

So a Pokemon who's 155 out of 255 now becomes 100. Or a Pokemon whose base stat is normally 25 now becomes 220.

It wouldn't be too crazy in practice because the "effect" would apply to both Pokemon on the field.

It would be a Legendary on the level of Kyurem-white. The version exclusive legends would be the grass and water ones respectively, and you can only get the fire head if you have the other two.

No, it would only really work as an exception more than a rule(e.g. Flying Press is the only dual type move). There's already pokemon that could conceivably be more than 2 types design-wise like Lugia and there's pokemon that have traits resembling a third type like Dhelmise and Steelworker, but anything beyond that doesn't really work large-scale IMO. It could end with some massive power creep since single types already have it kind of rough and it could also lead to questionable designs like Zapmolcuno if how close we've gotten until now is any indication.

Something they could expand on is how STAB and Defensive typing works. Like a Dark/Fire type Pokemon and a Fire/Dark Pokemon would be different. Main STAB is a 1.5 Bonus. 2ndary STAB is a 1.25 Bonus. 2ndary Type Super-Effective Damage Received is 1.75x instead of 2.

You could also have Pokemon they're Double Type: let's say a Fire/Fire type Pokemon. STAB for them could be a higher amount(2X instead of 1.5? Make it more?), but they also would take a 4x Weakness to all of Fire's weaknesses.

Well, I could see it working as a gimmick for a few unique Pokemon like the Unova dragon:

(No Ice because that is just suppose to be the leftovers)
Though a 4x weakness to ground would hurt, a 4x weakness sure as hell didn't stop Mega Fug, given that ability & all.

As an entire gimmick I don't see it lasting long. Game Freak already dumbs these games down for casuals so they sure as hell aren't about to complicate things to this extent. Just like how Poke fusion is limited to a few specific legends/gimmicks, this would be treated the same. More in favor of dual typed moves really.

What would go well with steel? it's weak to fighting, fire and ground while immune to poison and resists 10 other types
flying would be the obvious one to remove fighting and ground but adds electric. you could add electric to that but the stats are probably going to be a mess?

Kinda like Landurus but with armor or something. Weak to water & fire, but if it had something weird like Water Absorb on top of a standard ability for the lulz it would likely ruin competitive.

A triple type would be a fun change, but it would have to be given to a legendary or version exclusive fossil mon as an introduction to the idea. If its received well then fucking go for it in the next gen.
