I break down a pokemon in parts and evaluate it:

You probably value certain aspects differently from me, but I think they're all important to some degree. You could add other things like if it also happens to be your favorite type or favorite color, but that's my general idea.

having a number one is hard. i usually switch between like, my top 4 or 5 whenever someone asks for my absolute favorite.
the most important thing is to find a mon that absolutely clicks with you. one that you can relate to, or one with a design you love. maybe it carried you through your first region, or maybe they were an unexpected powerhouse in multiplayer battles. the most important thing to remember, though, is that it doesn't always have to be your number one. you're free to change it whenever you like.

I lean towards wichever happens to give me more inspiration for stories, even if I don't end up writing them or anything. Meditite and Medicham became my favorite line for this reason even if I usualy favor mounstrous over humanoid.

A mix of design and how much fun it is to use it. Gardevoir is mine for these reason. Graceful design, good abilities that make it work in singles or doubles, a large movepool, and it is usually one you can catch early on making it something you can enjoy the journey with. Its just a good, dependable pokemon all around.

I ended choosing it by which one I enjoyed fanart and merchandising the most, not just game related as it's an absolute shitmon. That doesn't mind I don't like many others, i just enjoy one above the others

For me, I looked for whatever Pokemon I found to be most like myself. It helps if you already like their design or typing.
