If it weren't for GF being scared of Yo-Kai Flop for no reason and wanting to ship something out for the anniversary, we probably would have gotten an expanded-upon Z version

Not unless you just really hate SM's story. The only advantages XY have are a larger dex and slightly less story focus, but there are also a lot of disadvantages like the low difficulty, lack of quality in the story, and inclusion of HMs.
