Thanks for the thread anon, even if a bunch of the kids don't get it.

I think his writing fit the anime more than it would a game, but I do kind of wonder where Pokemon would be if they followed the vision they initially set on before it blew up into what it is now. With the beta gold/silver, different tone, etc. I wouldn't expect it to be grimdark or some shit, but I wonder if we would have gotten as much of a globalized series or if they would have dug more into Japan.

But you're right. Even a cursory search of the episodes he directed, they have the most character focus. Within the constrains of the anime ostensibly being a marketing tool, Shudo really tried to tell some relatable stories in there.

Right on the money. Pokemon is incredibly squeaky clean now because of how much money is on the table. But back when it was first being produced it had rougher areas, and room to tell stories about kids that were abused turning to lives of crime, or changing yourself for someone only to have it blow up in your face.

I hope against hope with this new Mew stuff going on in the anime that we see Jessie's mom come back, with her connection to Mew and all, but it seems like the anime wants to all but forget the depth some of its characters have.

We could also mention the fish in the cerulean aquarium or any of the other nods or mentions before the Pokemon world became what it is now. There was more room for creativity, and it would have been weird, but not weirder than how he tried to end Minky Momo.

Also worth noting, the first movie's themes and visuals are ALL Shudo. Most of the anime oversight team was distracted dealing with the Porygon fiasco at the time, so Shudo got a few months to squeeze something out that would have been ripped apart by the oversight team. The result was the best, and arguably the only good pokemon movie.

Anyone with the slightest interest in Shudo should watch Minky Momo, it's the show both he and pretty much all the anime nerds in Japan considers his magnum opus. He also had much more free reins there since it wasn't based on a gorillion-dollar franchise.

the thing is, when he started on Pokemon, and arguably even for the first 2 years of the series, it wasn't a gorillion dollar franchise, so he was able to get a lot of good stuff in there. Most of the memorable character traits of anime only characters come from him.

Something like this would give Gen 9 the best story in the series. Inagine if the main villiain's goal was to remove pokemon entirely and revert the planet back to a time before pokemon, and in the final battle he uses a team of real animals (t-rex would be his signature "pokemon")

The article guy misrepresents Shudo pretty badly there. He never PROPOSED such an idea, he had thought of it as a potential series finale, but since the series just kept on running for all eternity he never actually pitched the plot idea. Shudo himself said that such a plot would obviously change the characters and their relationship forever to such an extent you can't just go back to Ash on a badge quest afterwards, which is why it would have to be saved for the end. Remember nobody back then expected the show to last for 20+ years.
