If Ambipom is unviable then the people using it shouldn't be ranking high enough for the usage to matter. Those Ambipom threads were hilarious because it forced Smogonfags to either rethink their tiers or admit that most people on Showdown are garbage, and Smogon refused to do either

I think I know what you're talking about, and it's pretty easy to explain.
PokeaimMD, a youtuber, thought Ambipom deserved more credit than it got. Smogon's UU council wrote it off as a shit, to the point where t was D rank (which means "don't discuss", meaning a Pokemon is so bad that any attempt to discuss it is considered trolling and its name is literally filtered).
Aim set out to prove that it wasn't shit by spending a month using it on every team. He and his fans used it enough for it to rise up to UU by usage. And then it dropped again literally the next month because it wasn't consistently reliable.
So it's not really a flaw in the tiering system. Ambipom may have had a niche in UU, but it wasn't good enough to stay in UU. It's more of a flaw in Smogon's moderation, since they blacklisted any attempt to claim it was even somewhat viable.

Having the tiers be defined manually by someone unbiased is way better than the janky usage-based shit they do now.

I remember this ugly chimp being a useful lead back in gen 4 online with no previews, its STAB fake outs smarted a bit and I won a lot with it using a poisonflinch core with serene grace Togekiss and toxic spikes drapion, why is it bad now that it cant even remain in UU? Too lazy to check

What's worse is that this bullshit somehow happened two generations in a row. Typhlosion was earily handled in Gen 6 NU (too reliant on prediction, too much support, destroyed to priority/rocks/fairly common checks in the tier, Specs set is too slow, Scarf set is too weak, etc). The vote was extremely close 4-3 and two of the people who were proban were extremely unsure about it. But instead of taking the time to retest the thing so it can be a Pokemon again, they used that time to shit on it on its Smogon page, then did the same exact thing next generation. It's almost like Merrick is working for Smogon or something.
