No, OP is right, the insistence on adhering to the traditional formula R/G established on every little thing in how the games are structured makes the series feel so samey and suggesting that all the games needing 8 gyms and an elite 4 and a villain team and a fire/water/grass starter given to you by a professor named after a tree and so on are the same as retaining core mechanics from game to game is disingenuous. Even the vast majority of fan games do this shit, like come on you know you don't HAVE to do all that exactly the same right?

What makes it endearing is the different puzzles that stand in your way and the new Pokémon you face up against. Trials were dumb because they were half assed last minute changes to a formula that isn’t broken. What exactly do you want to do in a Pokémon game?

That’s not why Gen 7 sucked at all. It sucked because it was slow, handholdy, interruptive, restricted, railroaded, dialogue heavy, cutscene heavy, had long load times, had slow and shitty overworld animations, tons of black loading screens as replacement for animations they were too lazy to make, had a shitty online system, rotomdex, etc.

Totem battles were unironically more enjoyable and creative than any gym battles I’ve played in over a decade.

I’d like gym battles again if they figured out how to revamp them and make them more interesting like Raihan’s gym.

Like a fire fighter who uses Water and Fire types, and the gym battle will randomly alternate between sunny and rainy or a gym leader who focuses on inverse battles, where the type chart is completely inversed

Unironically yes. GF literally removed HMs because of this and its one of the few things people universally liked about Gen 7

People are tired of GF not doing anything with them. They made an effort with them in Gen 5 but Gen 6 and 8 just have them stand in their facilities doing nothing again.
