You have to think, how do the top players get to be where they are? They're smart at strategy and use the strongest pokemon with the most synergy and likelihood of winning---Because 90+% of the top players play this way, we can EXPLOIT this.
They can be intelligent and savvy all they want, that doesn't mean jack shit if you confront them with a strategy literally NO ONE fucking uses, because that's unpredictable. BECAUSE it's unpredictable, your opponent is going to make what they THINK are the best plays when actually you have surprises for them in store.
Sure, to play the game this way you are deliberately not using the strongest team mates or otherwise running sub-optimal sets for the surprise factor, but if you can do that and do it well, your opponent literally helps defeat themselves FOR you. THEY make choices that lead to them losing. Every time they make a terrible choice because you have some weird obscure thing going on, it's like they're attacking themselves while you also attack them.
