modern jrpg with adjustable difficulty and exp gains, it looks visually like dragon quest XI and represents a reboot of the pokemon franchise that takes elements from various different games. it's more like a loose re-telling and re-imagining of kanto and johto; while most of the major characters and locations are the same it's much less faithful to the originals and there are new areas and dungeons to uncover. most of the world is open but there are areas that you need to unlock via plot, such as cerulean cave
you can have pokemon follow you from the start
the biggest change is that you have a choice of 4 playable character designs based off of Red, Blue, Green and Yellow (Yellow resembles the Pokemon Special character). You can also customize their outfits, hair, skin and eyes. the 3 characters you don't choose can be found as trainers in the game - Red is his quiet but strong self, Blue is Prof. Oak's cocky grandson, Green is a trickster who likes money and Yellow is a strange empath with a Pikachu who can tell you what your Pokemon are feeling
You also have a number of recurring 'rival' characters, but the main one is a character based on Silver (with personality traits of Paul from the anime); other recurring characters throughout the game include Kris (Prof. Elm's assistant), Eusine (a rare Pokemon hunter), etc. there a lot of other NPCs that have expanded roles and questlines as well, such as Mr. Fuji, as well as Copycat - who is a Ditto trainer resembling Duplica in this version.
not sure of the exact plot but the themes revolve around familiar themes of strength and mastery, nature vs technology, as well as using pokemon as tools vs. as friends. giovanni and team rocket take some inspiration from team snagem and cipher, they use pokemon as tools and are attempting to find the genetically engineered offspring of mew and harness its power to topple the pokemon league.
