I really like Pokemon in concept but I'm not a fan of turn based combat, and the mainline anime isn't really for me.

What pokemon experiences would you recommend for someone in my situation?

You would have to play the spin offs for something like that, and the problem is that they're also pretty slow mechanically if that's what you don't like about turn based combat, and a lot of them are still turn based. You might be able to get something out of the Ranger series on the DS or Pokken on the Switch though

Also Let's Go is a good way to get the collection aspect of the mainline series while the combat takes a back seat
