I've been playing this a ton the last week. Never played anything but halfway through Pokemon Yellow, so it's pretty crazy to me. Just got finished with the Poison gym. My team has the Arabomb Evo, the kill la kill fairy, Snugware, Semdemen, the punching t-rex, and the ice poison dinosaur. Sometimes I use the steel grass clovour Evo and the Mexican bean.
I spoiled myself a bit since I would look up the pokemon to know it's type, and that kind of ruined the surprise. I think it would be more fun to catch everything you see and try out lots of them. Try to have one of every type maybe, but it can be hard. I needed a full team of grass and water types for the Carlito fight.
Overall I say play it for the fun of it alone and to be surprised. I'm still always laughing at the jokes. I wish all the pokemon games were this funny, as I had never been able to get into them before.
