The first time you walk into the E4 you have no idea what you're in for, and no reason to be ready for multiple boss fights without healing. Lots of people lost that one. Plus the Rocket Hideout was full of traps that could get you low without realizing it and then the self destruct mons get you.

I started with DP and didn’t have a guide. Plus internet guides in 2007 weren’t kid friendly and not that easy to navigate, so I was never ready for the huge level jump at the elite four and then the even higher level jump with Cynthia

No, its accurate. If you started with gen 1 when the rest of the world did, you wouldn't know the structure of a pokemon game before getting into it. It would all be a surprise, and certain things would catch you with a blackout.

I got wiped twice by Cheren in my recent Black 2 playthrough because I got frustrated and kept spamming Counter with Rilou and allowed him to use Work Up with his Herdier like 4 times.

I’m sorry you wouldn’t have the common sense to be prepared for trickery in the base of villains. What exactly where you expecting: a map showing you directly where Giovanni was? I had that knowledge from playing other games and watching TV/movies. No excuses for that
