Apparently Machamp used to not have a belt.
Why did they add a belt?

i remember machamp not having one and machoke did, but it looks like around gen 4 they started drawing it with the belt. I guess the sprites didn't have enough detail to include it.

what i always found a little off was how well defined it and machoke's pecs are when they barely have any abs

Just looked at its sprites, Gen 1-3 were weirdly inconsistent.
In Gen 1, you can see a few dots lining its speedo. But in Gen 2, Silver has a belt but Crystal (which uses Gold's sprite as a basis for its animation) doesn't.
And in Gen 3, there's no belt or dots at all.
From Gen 4 on, there's a belt.

I think the anime is why, going by bulbapedo, the first episode that Machamp appeared in showed it wearing a belt.

Am I the only one who prefers Machamp as he looks in his Sugimori artwork for gen 1? His musculature isn't over the top, the crests on its head look way better, even similar to some kind of helmet, and the belt always looked dumb to me.

That's a bad faith argument. Now, looking at the Red/Green sprite, it's a bit hard to tell, even if there's some detail there it could be anything. Since the Red/Green art was based on the sprite, that should give us more information, but his arm is blocking the belt area in the picture and while you can't see it, it's a bit hard to tell.

I hope you mean this one, because the Blue art in the OP is way off-model and isn't indicative of anything. Granted, Bulbapedo apparently labeled this one as TCG instead of RG for some reason, I'm going to be honest I don't know why.

Is there anything not mentioned in the dex about it? It always struck me as a particularly weird accessory. I could understand spoons for Kadabra and Alakazam, since they are incredibly intelligent and have psychic powers, so it makes sense that they could obtain spoons (or spoon-like objects) relatively easily.
But Machoke and Machamp have purpose-made metallic and cloth clothing. Is it some sort of evolutionary misstep that humans have stepped in to try and fix? Is there some sort of wildlife organization that is finding young Machoke and equipping them with power save belts to protect their species? Or do Machop line members have their own fucking textiles and metalworks hidden out there in the mountains?

It's a championship belt, and is part of the reason Machamp needs to be traded to evolve. Machoke isn't a true champion, just a local strongman, until it goes on tour.

There's no answer to it. They weren't designed as animals but as individual monsters(and sometimes characters, but in the ultra series that's most times the same). Basically they made a strongman monster and put it in the game, without thinking whether its supposed to work as an animal-like species.

Assuming this is true, it's an outlier. Almost all of the original 151 were intended to be somewhat believable as creatures trying to survive in an ecosystem, or at least creatures that developed from an ecosystem.

There's a Fighting type representation gap, and a gen 1 "tough" pokemon representation gap. Machamp is mostly ascended for what it fits, as opposed to what it actually is. It's artificial, but not a horrible artificial pick.
