He's a character with flaws and if these flaws were properly addressed and he had an arc working towards overcoming them he'd be regarded as the best protagonist ever, but the structure of the show is so fucking inconsistent/nonexistent that any hope of him being fun to watch gets ruined. Some episodes he has no flaws and gets maximum luck with everything he does, other episodes he does have flaws and they're either ignored by the cast or any in-episode attempt at fixing them is forgotten about by next time and he's no different to what he was before.
The two biggest issues with him aside from that are that there's no main girl (him not being a girl isn't the problem, it's the lack of a girl alongside him that's the problem) and he's a walking Pokemon Go ad when Pokemon Go basically destroyed the franchise in everything other than profit for executives.
If he had a female companion alongside him and Ash and the series was competently structured he'd probably get a lot less flak than he does.
