>>47151351It's funny, too, because BW2's battles look much better with the grass on the sides of the battle platforms.
That aside, though, I'd like to add onto this: while you're right about the left being an abstraction, it's worth noting that it also has its own unique charm being an abstraction. Much like you could enjoy Platinum's charm, which would be the detailed back sprites, and of course that they're not being animated. There's something to love and appreciate about what these games brought, as they not only did the Pokemon justice and, ironically enough, gave them more personality than 3D did, but they also gave them their own unique taste to boot. But upon transitioning to 3D, all of that is lost for a stale, repetitive animation that doesn't change; there's no reason to revisit older games just for how the Pokemon looked, as it's all the same. It's much harder to enjoy Pokemon like Dewott in 3D than it is in 2D, for another example.
3D is just objectively terrible for a lot of Pokemon, if not all of them, because only up to a certain point were Pokemon designed with 3D in mind, and because of the overall lack of love put into how they move and function in their environment. There's nothing else to say other than that it's >lame, sterile, and lifeless.
Sure makes me wish they delivered when they said they cut the National Dex for graphical fidelity when I think of the 3D models specifically.
