When it lost confidence in itself. Up to Gen 6, the games were still justifiably Pokemon.
Gen 7 being a paradigm shift into Yokai Watch shittery is something we never recovered from. You can say what you want about the end of the honeymoon era in Gen 3, or the removal of many beloved things in Gen 5 and 6, but each game throughout 1-6 still held true to the core principles of the games.
You can say what you want about Sun and Moon, but they just aren't Pokemon games. The dex is fantastic, the region is conceptually sound, but absolutely everything from GO on is executed in such a half-assed or unrecognizable manner to what even Gen 6 managed to do right.

This. They removed character customization in ORAS because it was going to be Kalos' gimmick. When they decided that didn't work, they resorted to creating obligatory regional gimmicks like Z-Moves in Sun and Moon.
Since then the series hasn't expanded at all. It's just gimmick after gimmick.

Why couldn't gens 3-4 sell anywhere near the amount of copies that RBY sold? I'll definitely agree that gen 5 sucks, refer to >>47154271 >>47154320 for why it does, but gens 3-4 really aren't much better and only nostalgic zoomers think they're good.

aside from the new anime everything coming out was still an improvement, but the gamecube undersold
maybe advanded battle really was that big of a step down but its incredible popularity was due for a correction anyways, same lifespan in the spotlight as we see with things like fortnite and amongus to this day
designs got progressively worse but it wasnt until 3ds that the quality of the games were unforgivable

Speaking for myself here, I remember being 8-10 when Gen2 ended and 3 started. It wasn't as cool. maybe its the neon color Hoenn mons or the trumpets, OR new Anime side characters. It didnt "resonate" as much as the previous two did, or atleast I noticed in my social circles. I still like midkipz and the giant mouth thing tho

I'm not going to sit up here and say that the new Pokemon didn't look like Pokemon because they did, if Skitty isn't a Pokemon neither is Aipom. If Zangoose isn't a Pokemon neither is Furret and so on. But there was just a clear shift in almost everything and I sincerely believe it stems from a design philosophy rooted in that word "Advanced".

It's like in a weird way they were trying to force Pokemon forward in time somehow. It was almost (Thing) IN SPACE tier.

The anime was going to shit, too much filler and it made a lot of people give up, but Misty leaving and Ash losing again didn't help. Pokemania dying was more than one factor, but the anime getting worse and R/S having cut features didn't help.

I thought the same thing; although since its Game Freak we're talking about, they probably had problems coding dynamic customization and cutscenes reflecting it like XY did.
A nice compromise would've been a selection of outfits Brendan and May would switch to depending on area like they do for contests; swimsuits on Slateport's beach and water areas, raincoats on 119 and rainy routes, etc.
