Ampharos is a pun; Denryu can mean den(ki) (electricity) and ryu (current), but ryu also means dragon in Japanese. Denryu is electric dragon. In fact, Ampharos in the beta was Electric/Dragon which was changed in the final since Dragons were not commonplace until Gen 6 starts.
Dragon was the super powered type where at first it was relegated to a single line, then given to a trade evolution of an evolved Pokémon, then given to three Legendaries and a few Pokémon lines that you had to raise for a long time (with two of the three lines in question starting out as non-Dragon, and the third available near the post game). Fourth Gen was Gible line, which are hard to find and takes time to raise, and Legendaries. Gen 5 had all late game Dragons and Legendary Pokémon. Once Gen 6 starts, the earliest Dragon you can get is an optional fossil, but you can also acquire Axew and Bagon through rare encounters in a cave and Route 8. Fairy trivialized the type where Dragon is rarer and hard to get compared to other types, but much more easily available than before. Even so, except for the Dragons intentionally made weak as a gimmick (Applin and Noibat in USUM), Dragons are either uncommon in late game or extremely rare in early game.
