I think regions based on deserts from around the world like Arabia, Australia, the American West (Orre was supposedly based on Arizona) and Northern Mexico would be easy to develop for Game Freak yet still be interesting and fun to explore.

Anyone else?

The game cube games did whatever, as they didn't have a whole region, gym quest and everything else Game Freak need to do when designing a new game, so no anon.
Game Freak build regions in a particular way, fuck the fact there's no desert in it in real life, we'll just throw one in anyway (hoenn, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar) so even if there was a 100% desert region used, it'd still be lusher and greener than the average dustbowl nation.

I want a spin-off and spiritual successor to Coliseum, only located in the ancient sahara, with ancient civilizations and ruins.

In this way it would not affect the main games and it would be good for the franchise to have more products from different developers.

You can make the game primarily desert with some other biomes on the fringes. Same thing they currently do with the primary biome being temperate/subtropical forest in most games. Have 50% of the map be hot desert, 25% be the leeward dry temperate desert side of a mountain with snow at the higher elevations, and 25% be the moist temperate forest on the windward side of the mountain. Adjust percentages accordingly.

This. There are forested hills right next to the Mexican arid zones. Also, oases and ruins justify any change of scenery in a desert.
