Lana was straight filler. Lillie was the main girl with her huge backstory. Literally all her family members were big plot points and she was directly tied to the ultra beasts. And I say all this as a diehard mallowfag

And yet the writers tore through those "important" plot points of Lusamine's mental breakdown (only get got sick from possession, not 'cause she was a mental hag and was back in time for end of christmas break) and daddy gone bye-bye instead of building plots around them, but they sure did love sticking Ash and Lana together and having someone else remark they were a cute couple or tease Lana about "her boyfriend".
Hell, Ash helped Lana win her Trial battle and first Z-Crystal and was with her when she drove off hunters and achieved her dream of catching a Legendary Pokémon with rod and reel, the main girl of the series was obvious to anyone with eyes.

In the credits, it seems OLM Asia (located in Malaysia) has Malaysian animators in it to make up for the dwindling number of nip animators.
